Utility versus Beauty: It’s in the Details

Some people think that spending a little more time and money on minor details is a waste.  I think that if something is worth doing, it’s worth doing well and beautifully.  Here’s one simple example that I noticed when parking at the Geyer Family YMCA:

It’s in a parking lot, it’s hidden behind cars of all shapes and sizes for most of the day, and it’s more utilitarian than decoration.  Still, just a little detail goes a long way on this street lamp post.

What are some other details that are worth the effort (and expense, even in these AA+ times)?
